Friday, August 14th, 2020 - Monday, August 17th, 2020
The Southern Oregon Coast will be the backdrop where you'll learn all the tips and tricks to shoot the night sky.
Pack your bags, and join me on the Southern Oregon Coast in August of 2020! This stretch of coast is some of the most beautiful in the world, and dark skies make it an excellent place to learn to shoot the night sky. On this adventure, we'll spend two nights in the Brookings area, and one evening in the Bandon area.
While this workshop is centered around learning to shoot the night sky, we will also be spending our time shooting sunset and sunrise. We'll even be headed to the Coastal Redwood forests of California for at least one sunrise, and we'll have options for the other two.
Best of all, my friends at Slik USA will be loaning us star trackers for the entire workshop. Each student will get hands on experience with a star tracker, and then you will learn all of the post processing tricks to blend those tracked exposures with different foregrounds.
I've spent years scouting these locations and finding the perfect spots to compose beautiful images, so all you need to worry about it showing up (and bringing a few things)! I'll be showing you some of the best places to shoot on the Oregon Coast and guiding you on how to photograph them successfully. I can't wait for you to join me!
Price: $995 ($250 due at registration)
This is the price of guiding fees only. It is important to note that Austin James Jackson LLC is not responsible for your lodging or travel to each location. $250 is due at the time of registration to hold your spot. The remaining balance of the workshop must be paid no later than 30 days prior to the first day of the workshop. If you fail to do so, your spot in the workshop may be lost, and you will not recieve a refund.
Should you need to cancel your attendance to the workshop, the down payment can be refunded within 120 days of the start of the workshop, minus a small processing fee. After 120 days before the workshop, the down payment is non-refundable.
This workshop will not be very physically demanding, and we will never hike more than a couple mile from your vehicle. Some of the locations we will be accessing have steep terrain, but nothing too challenging for someone capable of hiking a couple miles on uneven surfaces.
If you have any concerns about your fitness level for this workshop, please contact me.
Group Size: 5 Students
I limit my group size to 5 students so that I can spend as much time as needed working with each student individually. This workshop is open to all skill levels, so I expect that each student will need help directly catered to them, and most instruction will be individual, rather than as a group. This allows me to successfully teach both beginners, intermediates, and aspiring pros all in the same workshop!
Recommended Skill Level:
My clients have a wide range of skills all the way from beginner to experienced semi-professional. This workshop is open to clients of all skill levels, and I teach each student as much information as they are able to digest in a short weekend.
What Will Be Covered:
- Both wide angle and telephoto compositions will be discussed.
- We will discuss what apps I use for predicting weather, as well as what kind of weather creates the best conditions. We will also talk about what subjects to shoot when the light is less than ideal.
- How to properly expose every photo and how to read the histogram.
Focus Stacking and Bracketing
- Overcoming the limitations of the camera to create perfectly exposed and in focus images from front to back.
- We will mostly just use Lightroom as a way to store photos.
- All of the magic happens here. I'll be teaching you my whole workflow.
-Blending tracked Milky Way exposures with blue hour exposures.
Adding Light and Glow to a Scene
Dodging and Burning
What You Need to Bring:
Tripod (the sturdier, the better)
Lenses covering a wide range of focal lengths
Proper clothing (rain jacket, warm clothes, hiking boots)
Waders or Neoprene Socks (not required, but highly recommended)
Laptop with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom installed
Camera batteries, chargers, extra memory cards
A good attitude and willingness to learn!
Friday, August 14th -
The group will meet in Brookings at 5pm. We will have a brief discussion and then head straight out to our shoot for the night along the beaches of Brookings.
Saturday, August 15th -
The group will meet around 5am in Brookings. We will then all head down to the beautiful coastal California redwoods for a morning shoot. You will then get the rest of the afternoon to rest up for another busy evening of shooting. We will regroup in Brookings again at around 5pm, and we will be headed for a new beach scene just north of Brookings.
Sunday, August 16th -
The group will have a few options for sunrise on Sunday morning. We will discuss the night before, and decide where we want to end up going. After sunrise, the group will have the chance to rest and we will meet up again around 6pm in Bandon. We will shoot sunset along the beach in Bandon.
Monday, August 17th -
The group will wake up early and meet in Bandon around 6am. We will make the short walk down to the beach and shoot sunrise. The group will then have the opportunity to rest for a couple hours before our extensive post processing session. The post processing session will start in the morning and will run until sometime between 5-7pm. After the processing session in Bandon, the group will say our final "see-you-laters", and part ways.
Guiding. As an expert and someone who frequently travels the coast, I will be sharing my knowledge on locations, taking you to the place where I believe there to be the most favorable weather, as well as knowledge of the tide tables and which locations shoot best under which conditions.
Post Processing Session. There will be one session at the end of the weekend where we will go over and work through a few of the images we captured together. These sessions will talk about everything from file storage to workflow to sharpening a final image for print or web. You will be learning post processing techniques that allow you to have full control over your images. Time will be left for a short image critique at the end of the processing sessions.
Instruction. I will be instructing the group as a whole, but there will be plenty of one on one time during both the sessions in the field as well as the classroom session.
